Eid Prayers On Campus

Insha Allah, the MSA will be organizing Eid-ul-Adha prayers on campus this year based on your requests. Students writing exams on Eid day, international students and students residing on campus are specially encouraged to attend this prayer service. Please plan to arrive early since the prayers will begin promptly at the specified time. If you have any questions, please contact Mueen at vp.brothers@uoftmsa.com.

Sandwich Run

The Multi-Faith Centre, in collaboration with the Hindu Student Council (HSC), Morning Star, Hilllel Community, and the MSA will be doing a Multi-Faith Sandwich Run for the needy on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 from 1.00 - 4.00 p.m. We will be meeting in the Koffler Institute (different from Koffler Centre) in the kitchen to make the sandwiches along with some inter-faith discussion. Following that we will then be handing the sandwiches out to the needy. This is an amazing opportunity to give back to the community and have some fun while doing so!

“THE U.S. VS OMAR KHADR” DOCUMENTARY SCREENING: Come watch this riveting documentary alongside one of the producers himself, Nazim Baksh! This documentary will challenge you to think about whether justice is a right of all citizens or whether certain circumstances, like finding a person’s cause and family averse, makes them lose their right to justice. Accused of killing an American soldier in July of 2002, Omar Khadr, a Toronto born Canadian Citizen, remains in U.S. custody at Guantanamo Bay detention camp. Evidence suggesting that false confessions were extracted from Omar while he was being tortured and stunning new evidence that the solider who was faltally hurt could have been killed by “Friendly Fire” are beginning to unravel his case for innocence.

Jumu’ah Prayer Update

Please note that both Friday congregations have been moved earlier by 1 hour to adjust for Day Light saving hours starting Friday, November 7th. The two Friday (Jumuah) congregations will be conducted in the Debates Room at Hart House (2nd floor) between 12.20 - 1.00 p.m. and 1.20 - 2.00 p.m.

First Jumu’ah: 12.20 - 1.00 p.m.
Second Jumu’ah: 1.20 - 2.00 p.m.

The congregations times of other prayers have been effected similarly. Please see prayer timings for more information.

Drop Fees Student Day of Action

The Drop Fees campaign is initiated by the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario. Ontario is ranked last for per-student funding in Canada and Ontario students face the highest tuition fee hikes. The MSA is endorsing the student day of action with hope that it will help to focus attention on student concerns. Students will rally at Sid Smith, then join thousands of other students from across the GTA at Queen’s Park. Free hot chocolate will be served!

Note: If you have class or other academic requirements happening this day, talk to your professor. They have been informed to allow students to attend the rally. (Read this for more information).

Beginner Arabic Class

The MSA is starting a beginner formal Arabic class. The course will be delivered free of cost by a regular MSA volunteer who studied Arabic through courses offered at the University of Toronto:

Beginner Arabic NML210,
Intermediate Arabic NML310, and
Advanced Arabic NML410

If you are interested in participating, please email the teacher, Tegar, with your name and background in relation to formal arabic. There is NO FEE associated with this course. Orphan Sponsorship Program

The Orphan Sponsorship Program will be fundraising Friday, October 24th, and Friday, October 31st, after Jumu’ah Prayers. Muslim-Christian Student Dialogue

You are invited to participate in a Muslim-Roman Catholic Dialogue with other university students. This is part of an exciting global project funded by the United Nations to engage young adult Muslims and Catholics in interfaith dialogue. It will provide an authentic opportunity to develop mutual respect and understanding. Similar events are being held in Egypt and Sudan . There are 15 limited spots for participants from each community – the registration deadline is Wednesday Oct 22. Please confirm with your name, e-mail, telephone, and identify whether you are Muslim or Catholic to: multi.faith@utoronto.ca

The event will be facilitated by Tor Iorapuu, a Roman Catholic from Nigeria and Habeeb Alli, a Muslim from Canada associated with the Canadian Council of Imams. Both are inspiring, dynamic and resourceful people. Emphasis will be given at the event to students’ individual experience of faith. Students will be invited to be share with each other rather than having a series of expert/academic speakers presenting lectures. The program will begin with a dinner on the Friday evening and continue on Saturday which commences with a tour of a church and a mosque. The event is free and includes dinner and snacks.
